Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church History
A group of dedicated Christians decided they wanted a church to worship in and on July 8, 1853 a deed was written between W.W. Cochran and D.L. Gordon one part and Elizah Foster, W.W. Cochran, Alfread Sears, W.W. Jackson and J.J. Davis as trustees of Mt. Carmel Academy and John Wise, Mark Turner, R.M. Everett, John Johnson, Sam Rowan, E.W. Jackson and D.L. Gordon as trustees of Mt. Carmel Episcopal Church in the consideration of the sum of ten dollars in Land Lot 150, a square of two acres to be used as an Academy and a Church.
In 1878, Mt. Carmel was transferred from the McDonough Circuit to the Hampton Circuit. The churches on the Hampton circuit were Mt. Pleasant, Sunnyside and Mt. Carmel.

In 1953, the church was completely remodeled with four Sunday school rooms added, new carpet, pews piano and a fellowship building completed with kitchen, dining area and restroom was built.
In 1958, Hampton became a full charge and Lovejoy and Mt.Carmel became a charge with services at Mt. Carmel on the first and third Sundays. Later it was decided a church service was needed at both churches every Sunday, so a schedule of an early service at one church and a late service at the other began. This was on a six month rotating basis.
On May 24, 1964, it was voted to build a new parsonage on the church grounds at a cost of $14,720 and furnishings at a cost of $2,447. It was completed in October 1964 and Rev. and Mrs. Edward Hager were the first pastor family to live there. Mr. and Mrs. Loy B. Mitchell dedicated 30 ft of land to put the parsonage on.
On December 24, 1964 the church and fellowship building were completely destroyed by a tornado. This however did not stop the worship services for the 138 members of Mt. Carmel. They met with the Lovejov Church for Sunday School and worship until the new and present church building was erected in 1965 under the leadership of Rev. Edward A. Hager.
On April 27, 1975 it was voted to put memorial stained glass windows in the present sanctuary.
Mt. Carmel Methodist Church has had many revivals and has always had a Homecoming service. Many devoted Christians have served the church and many beloved pastors have served Mt. Carmel and their memories and ministries remain.
A list of the Ministers and their dates of service
are provided. (
